Reading Slump Blues

How can I be in a reading slump when I have this cozy reading corner???

If you follow my posts you may have noticed that things have been a little quiet here for a couple of weeks. Or maybe you didn’t notice, I don’t know. I’m not the center of the universe, contrary to popular opinion.

I took a bit of a break from blogging because I have a lot going on: Pop DNA has some big things going on, and I got a promotion at my day job, which is great but also means I am spending a little more time and attention on it than before, so have less of those things to devote to blogging.

A break also kind of made sense because I’ve kind of been in a reading slump the past couple weeks, and it’s hard to write about books authentically when you’re not reading books, at least for me. This is partly because for our last podcast episode we discussed Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I felt the need to spend two weeks rewatching every episode, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for reading.

But it’s also partly because I just sometimes have reading slumps. It’s hard to say why; sometimes I’ll just have a period where nothing I pick up to read really sparks my excitement. This period could last anywhere from a couple of days to a month. (I don’t think I’ve ever had one longer than a month.)

It is a bit of a bummer while I’m in the slump, but what usually happens is that I end up finally finding something that I can’t put down, usually either an old favorite or an anticipated new release, and then that leads to getting on a roll, where I’ll read like it’s going out of style. (Ha! That will never happen.)

So I’m not discouraged, even though I’m about halfway through the book I’m currently reading and I’ve been reading it for 12 days. I’m not quite out of my slump yet, but things will look up soon, I know. I just have to ride it out.

I did read books in April, but not as many as usual, so I’m thinking instead of doing an April wrap-up, I’ll do an April/May wrap-up at the end of this month. It’ll be a monster post, for sure, so there’s something to look forward to!

What about you? Do you ever have reading slumps? Or writing slumps? How do you get out of them? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I tended to binge read. I’d read one book after another whenever I had spare time, but then suddenly I’d just tire of books….so my attention would turn to either writing, or watching movies or a TV series. More recently though I’ve tried to be more moderate in everything and so far it’s working well. A little reading, a little writing and a movie or TV series thrown in here and there….and long walks to clear the mind.
